Home Emergency Preparation
FEMA, the Red Cross and many other local and federal organizations recommend a home emergency kit for every family. In the event of a large-scale emergency, relief workers or local officials will not be able to get to everyone immediately. Help may not arrive for hours or even days. Recommended contents for the kit vary slightly, but all agree on the basic items:
- First Aid Kit
- Flashlight and Batteries
- Whistle for each individual
- Non-perishable food for 3 days
- Battery powered or hand-cranked radio
- Moist towelettes and trash bags for hygiene
- Can opener
- Warm Blanket or personal shelter
- Water-1 gallon/person/day
- Water purifying materials
There are many other considerations depending on your specific circumstances. These include important documents, infant supplies, pet supplies, extra clothes, or cold weather gear.
