Backpacker 2011 Editor's Choice Winner
The SteriPEN Adventurer Opti is pocket-sized device that quickly destroys harmful microbes, pathogens and germs that may be present in untreated water. The Opti uses a specially disgned optical eye to sense the water. This patent-pending technology ensures safe use and provides purification in even the coldest of waters.
The Adventurer Opti is easy to use-just push the button to activate, place the lamp in a container of clear water and agitate the water slightly until the indicator turns green. The entire process takes about 48 seconds per half liter of water. In addition the built-in optical sensor doubles as a back-up flashlight.
The Adventurer Opti uses lithium 123A batteries-either disposable or rechargeable. Quality disposable 123A batteries are typically good for 100 .5 liter doses; while rechargeable batteries will last for 40-50 .5 liter doses. The Adventurer lamp is rated for 8000 cycles (up to 2000 gallons) and weighs only 3.5 oz with batteries. The package contains one Adventurer Opti, a black neoprene case with belt loop, a user’s guide and two 123A batteries.
If you're not sure that clear water will be available the SterPEN Bottle prefilter is recommended. The prefilter screws on most wide mouth bottles and filters particulates larger than 4 microns. To use with the Adventurer, simply screw the prefilter on, fill your bottle, remove the prefilter and then dose the water with the Adventurer Opti according to the instructions. The Adventurer Opti requires a bottle with a 1.75" opening such as a Nalgene wide-mouth.

About SteriPEN Microbiological Purifiers
SteriPEN water purifiers disinfect water with light. The high energy, ultraviolet light produced by the SteriPEN destroys the DNA of any microbes that may be present thus preventing reproduction and rendering the organism harmless. This same type of process is used commercially in bottling plants, hospitals and water treatment facilities. SteriPEN devices do not add chemicals or alter the taste of water.
When used as directed the SteriPEN will not cause any UV exposure to the user. The UV-C light produced by the device will not pass through most materials. Water containers made from glass, ceramic, metal and nearly all plastics block UV-C transmission. Also the underside of the air/water surface in the container acts as a reflector of UV-C. The SteriPEN has sensors that prevent the unit from operating unless immersed in water.
When in use, the SteriPEN automatically controls the operation time. When activated and placed in water, the unit automatically delivers the appropriate dose for that volume and temperature of water. It’s important to gently sir or agitate the water while dosing to ensure uniform UV treatment.
The SteriPEN lamp is fluorescent and does not have a filament to break or burn out. Made of thick quartz, it is also very durable and should never need replacement. The filament does have a lifespan and will ease to operate when the maximum number of cycles has been reached. The maximum number of cycles varies with model from 8000 to 3000.
If clear water is not available, use a prefilter. SteriPEN offers a inexpensive 4 micron filter for this purpose, but in a pinch you might use a coffee filter, bandanna or other item. Also, simply letting the particulate settle to the bottom and pouring off the clear water into another container might work. If it is an emergency, you can treat turbid water by doubling the dose.
