PREPARING FOR THE OUTDOORS
The best way to avoid problems is to plan ahead thoroughly and take precautionary measures so that if something does go wrong the effects will be minimized. Being physically fit, staying well hydrated, taking an appropriate amount of food and water for your trip, wearing/taking the appropriate clothing and footwear, and taking anything you will specifically need for the environment you will be traveling in will diminish the chances that you will experience major difficulties on your trip that could lead to a survival situation. Try to evaluate what could go wrong on your trip and have a contingency plan ready.
Leave a detailed itinerary with a trusted friend or family member who can call for help if you haven’t reached your destination by the scheduled time.
Overestimate the amount of time it will take you to get to the various destinations on your trip. If you are more worried about keeping a tight schedule than traveling safely, you could make bad decisions and overexert yourself.
