First, it's small enough to be carried in a pocket, which means that you always have it. While it's good idea to carry a backpack with normal gear and supplies, having the most essential life-saving items always on your person is very important. Backpacks are lost, stolen, damaged, etc. Having a pocket sized, back-up kit in your pocket might make the difference if something unplanned should occur.

In addition… to the AMK Personal Survival Pak there are a few other important items to always have with you in the wilderness. Here are our suggestions:
Adventure Medical Kits Heatsheet Survival Emergency Blanket
The Heatsheet is a durable, waterproof, 8' x 5' 2.8 ounce survival blanket with survival and first-aid instructions printed directly on the blanket. Unlike other survival blankets, the Heatsheet is made with a low-density polyethylene film that resists tears and punctures, is big enough for two people and reflects up to 90% of body heat. The bright orange stripe increases visibility. You'll find this to be useful for improvising shelter and signaling.
550 Paracord
550 cord is always a good idea to have on hand. From making shelter to an emergency shoelace, you'll find at least a hundred uses for this useful and versatile item. Genuine 550 cord has seven inner strands that can be separated from the outer sheath, is made from mildew resistant nylon and has a breaking strength of 550 pounds.
Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide
When it's impractical to boil water, these small tablets offer a lightweight, inexpensive way to purify your drinking water. All you need is a one liter container of some type, a sharp edge to open the foil wrapper and the patience to let them do their job. A freezer zip-type bag makes a nice back-up water container that is small, light and probably already in your kitchen.
A knife
A knife is one of the most valuable tools to have in the wilderness. Having the right knife greatly increases the efficiency of building both shelter and fire, two major priorities in a survival situation. Shelter will keep you from losing your body's heat in a cold or wet environment. Fire will keep you warm, boil water, signal and much more. Choosing a quality knife that suits your personality and environment is a large part of being prepared in the wilderness. |
