You’ll have the confidence to know that the internal circuitry is functioning and the battery is reliable every time you venture out. There is also a built-in GPS acquisition test, a function exclusive to ACR.

Despite its small size, the MicroFix is a powerful and feature rich PLB. It transmits a 5 watt signal for 40 hours at -4° F (longer in warmer conditions) using advanced transmission technology. A sensitive (–136dbm) GPS receiver ensures fast acquisition of satellite signals. It exceeds RTCM waterproof requirements for Category 2 (non-buoyant) PLBs.

The 2 step pictorial directions on the unit make it easy for anyone to operate. And the one-button operation means the unit can be activated more easily if you are injured or with a gloved hand. The MicroFix also transmits a 121.5MHz SAR homing signal to ensure quick rescue. The non-hazmat, lithium battery has a life span of 5 years or until activated. You must replace the battery if you activate your unit. Includes lanyard and multi-function clip.

About PLBs

Personal Locator Beacons are designed for emergency use in remote areas. When activated, the PLB will broadcast a distress signal that is received by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system, which pinpoints the PLBs location. The satellite forwards the signal to the designated ground station for that location. The ground station coordinates with local rescue personnel and notifies your emergency contacts. In addition to the GPS information, SAR personnel can also use the built-in 121.5 MHz homing signal to determine your exact location.

If you activate your PLB, it transmits a unique signal containing your identification. That’s why it is so important to register your unit. Plus, registering your PLB is required by law. It’s free, it’s easy and it could help save your life. In the USA, just go to this website and follow the directions. Or you can download the form directly here and mail or fax it in.

If you have a medical condition, make sure to include it when registering. This could prove to be critical information if you have to activate the PLB. Keep your registration information current. If you’re planning a new trip, develop a medical alert, or have new emergency contact information be sure to update your form. Also update the registration information if you loan the unit out or are traveling with companions. All of this data could play an important role in a search and rescue effort and also serves to conserve SAR resources by reducing false alert deployments.

Deploying a PLB is a serious matter. It should only be done when all other means of self-rescue have been eliminated, when the situation is grave and bodily harm is imminent. When you push the button, many people will go into motion assuming that you are in a perilous situation and require immediate assistance.
