Cyalume lightsticks are also variously known as chemsticks, chemlights, and glow sticks. But unlike the light sticks that you may have noticed at concerts or other events, these are honest-to-gosh, 12-hour, military grade, genuine Cyalume lightsticks.
Cylume lightsticks are non-toxic, non-flammable, waterproof, safe for tents and are utterly reliable. They do not require batteries and work in all types of weather. A Cyalume lightstick consists of a plastic tube containing a liquid that has special fluorescers which are separated from another liquid (an activator) by a glass capsule. The tube is sealed. To activate, simply bend the tube, which breaks the inner capsule and combines the two chemicals, and shake.
Cyalume’s non-toxic nature and ease of use makes it appropriate for children over six to use. We include it in our Children’s Survival Kit and suggest that you do as well. A lightstick can be a great comfort to a child during a long night and will make the child more visible.
Cyalume lightsticks are great for general illumination and for marking key locations and gear around the camp. Each lightstick has a lanyard hole, making it easy to secure to clothing, life vests, gear or hang from a lanyard. Because they produce no sparks or heat, lightsticks can be used in confined spaces, during refueling and in environments that may contain combustible gases. Cyalume lightsticks can be used to signal others by attaching to a length of rope and swinging it in a circle.
