This is a carefully designed package containing a selection of quality, dependable items from trusted manufacturers. Easily fitting into the smallest daypack, and weighing less than 1.75 pounds, you’ll have everything you need to keep you alive for days. The basic survival priorities of shelter, fire, water and signaling are all addressed with redundancy. Most of these items are not only useful in a survival situation but also have important everyday utility, greatly increasing their value and function.

You’ll want to add a knife or multitool of your choice and a first aid kit, if you don’t already have one.

Many important items are conveniently and economically packaged together in the Pocket Survival Pak. Fire starting materials, a whistle, a signaling mirror, compass and many other items are stored in a waterproof pouch that can be easily carried in a pocket. See the Pocket Survival Kit product spotlight for in-depth information on each item.
The Heatsheet Survival Emergency Blanket will help you stay dry, help prevent hypothermia and serve as a signaling aid. The Heatsheet is made of a low-density polyethylene film that is superior to traditional Mylar survival blankets in many ways. The Heatsheet is easy to open and refold, waterproof, quiet, larger than most others and is orange and silver to increase visibility. And, importantly, this blanket resists tearing far better than the Mylar blankets. As a bonus, first aid and survival instructions are printed on the blanket for easy reference. The Heatsheet can be used to signal, as shelter material, or a ground cloth in addition to a blanket.
In addition to the HeatSheet Emergency Blanket, we've included a HeatSheet Emergency Bivvy. Although at first it may seem to be overkill to have both, we think it's a good idea. Shelter is almost always the most important priority in a survival situation and we think it's worth the few extra ounces to have some redundancy in this area. Here's a few reasons why: You may need to share with a companion who's less prepared, you may want to use the Heatsheet as an overhead, lean-to type of shelter and the bivvy for personal warmth and sleeping, you may need to use the HeatSheet as a signaling device and the bivvy for shelter, or you may wish to simply have a back-up in case one or the other is lost or damaged. The HeatSheet Emergency Bivvy is made of the same material as the HeatSheet Emergency Blanket, reflects up to 90% of body heat, weighs only 3.5 ounces and come in a ripstop nylon stuff sack.
550 Paracord has hundreds of uses from an emergency shoelace to improvising shelter. The inner strands can be removed and used to repair clothing or as fishing line. This strong, though small rope has proven itself to be invaluable time after time. With a breaking strength of 550 pounds, it’s strong enough to lash a ridgepole to a tree while light enough that the 45 feet included in this package only weighs 2.75 oz. Although it has many uses, it is not designed for climbing and should never be used for that purpose. See the 550 Paracord product spotlight for an in-depth look at this product.
Hydration is an important survival priority in all environments. Making the available water safe to drink is easy with Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide tablets and a 1-quart Nalgene bottle. Just fill the bottle with the available water (it is always a good idea to pre-filter dirty water with a t-shirt or bandana) drop in a PA tablet and wait. See the Potable Aqua product spotlight for an in-depth review by Buck Tilton.
The Olicamp Space Saver Cup is one of several items in this package that has both everyday and survival utility. This stainless steel cup fits precisely around a Nalgene bottle adding virtually no bulk and only a little weight. The primary purpose of the cup is to serve as a container for boiling water over a fire or stove. The Space Saver Cup can be used for making tea, coffee or hydrating dinner. In a survival situation it can be used to contain and boil water for drinking.
Cyalume lightsticks, also known as chemsticks, also have multiple uses. These 6 inch light sticks last 12 hours, emit no heat (safe for tents) and require no batteries. Cyalume has dozens of general uses around the campsite in addition to providing continuous light in an emergency situation. They provide a nice back-up to a flashlight and can be used for all-night illumination or signaling.
Because fire is so important in a survival situation, we’ve doubled up on some items. The Swedish Firesteel Scout provides redundancy with the Sparklite firestarter included in the Pocket Survival Pak. The Scout is rated for 3000 strokes, works when wet, includes the striker and has a bright red handle for increased visibility.

If you like to hike, backpack, hunt, climb, camp or anything else that takes you into the outdoors, you and your companions will be safer and feel more confident with this collection of dependable gear.
