The WaterWorks EX microfilter is MSR’s most comprehensive filtering system. Part of the MSR Longevity series, the WaterWorks offers two stages of filtering, a long-lasting, .2 micron ceramic filter, a second stage PES membrane for additional filtering plus a carbon core that removes unpleasant tastes and odors. The filter removes protozoa (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium), bacteria, particulate, some chemicals and many pesticides. If you are concerned about viruses, treat the water before or after filtering with a disinfectant such as chlorine or iodine.
To increase efficiency and ease of use, MSR developed the AirSpring Accumulator, a way to use a bubble of trapped air to push more water through in less time. On the handle down stroke the air bubble is compressed, storing some of the pump force, then on the up stroke, the bubble expands pushing water through the cartridge.

The cartridge is rated for up to 2000 liters depending on the condition of the water and an indicator gauge is included to let you know when replacement is recommended. The WaterWorks EX includes a stuff sack, hose float, filter gauge, scrub pad and instructions.

As is typical of MSR products, the WaterWorks EX is durable, well designed and functional. The filter element can be cleaned repeatedly for complete recovery, no tools are required for disassembly, the filter rate is up to one liter per minute and it attaches directly to a Nalgene wide mouth bottle or any MSR Hydration bag. The WaterWorks EX is recommended for extended wilderness excursions and trips to developing countries.
