CREATING A SURVIVAL KIT
The purpose of a survival kit is to assist you in meeting your needs in a survival situation. The best kits will allow you to meet your needs with the least amount of time and energy.

By reviewing what your needs may be, you can assemble the best survival kit for you. Here are some suggestions:

Make sure that you keep these ten essentials on you at all times. This list may vary slightly depending on the location and season of your travels. An emergency blanket and at least one signaling device such as a whistle or signal mirror are often included in the ten essentials. These items along with a supply of water, and any special medication you need are essential. Toilet paper is your friend, don’t forget it.

Once you’ve obtained all the items you need for your survival kit, you’ll need a container to hold them. Depending on space, you may need to make some compromises in what you are taking with you. Some people take a survival kit that fits in a small metal tin; others use a backpack. The size and comprehensiveness depends on your skill and experience level in survival situations and how much you can reasonably carry with you.

One idea that may be useful is to carry a larger more comprehensive kit to your base camp and take along a smaller more focused kit when you are traveling away from camp. Remember that even though you may be experienced and tough enough to survive with a minimal kit, others who are with you may not be able to use it effectively without your help. Always keep in mind that this is a kit whose sole purpose is to help you stay alive until you are rescued or can find your way out of the situation you are facing. It's better to be overprepared.

Since you never know when you may get lost or separated from others, it’s a good idea to always have a few items on your person anytime you travel. Travel clothes with lots of pockets are especially handy for carrying around a base of survival equipment. A good pocket knife and/or multi-tool are useful in everyday circumstances and can be a great backup to your primary survival knife. A loud whistle can help you find others you have become separated from. Signal mirrors are so small and lightweight, there’s no reason not to carry one with you when traveling. A small flashlight is very handy. A lighter or waterproof matches to start a fire should always be on your person. Carrying a compactly folded heavy duty garbage bag will allow you to improvise shelter. A mini first-aid kit would be good to carry if you have room in your pockets. Some form of high calorie food and a day’s supply of water will make your life much easier if you do get lost or separated overnight.

A medium sized, soft, waterproof pack should be sufficient for holding a comprehensive survival kit that will meet your needs in the environment in which you are traveling. You can wrap parachute cord around the outside of other elements in your kit to save space. Fill in any empty spaces with cotton balls, which you can use as tinder if you need to make a fire.

Before you leave for your trip, be sure you are as prepared as possible, both in knowledge as well as equipment. Taking along a comprehensive survival kit and knowing how to use it requires extra effort and time, but if you ever face a survival situation, you’re greatly increased chances of making it out alive will prove to be a worthwhile investment.
